This site contains information for the cloud computing special interest group of APANA. It is set up as though it were a real APANA region, to provide the same services as a normal APANA region.
What is APANA?
APANA is the Australian Public Access Network Association, a technical hobby group comprising people who wish to learn about and get real experience with computer networks. Dating back to the era when Internet access was not available to the average consumer, APANA has evolved from dial-up uucp based mail connections, through modems, ISDN and ADSL connections. The emphasis has been on implementing and managing infrastructure, using Open-Source platforms. This has included Linux, freeBSD and openBSD, although we do have Mac and Windows users too.
APANA has regions in WA, SA, Victoria, ACT, Hunter Valley, NSW and Queensland.
What is Cloud Computing?
There are many definitions of cloud computing, generally revolving around the use of third-party infrastructure hosting services for organisation, to reduce management overheads and achieve savings.
Why is APANA using cloud computing?
Although APANA has traditionally provided and managed its own infrastructure, it has also had a major objective of educating members for "real-world" activities. In fact, many APANA members have gone on to careers with ISP's, or to work in other network-related areas of IT. So with cloud computing emerging as a major world trend in IT, we felt that a special interest group could familarise members with the techniques, available services, and issues that any business would face in moving its IT "to the cloud". The SKY region is the implementation of that special interest group.
Who can join?
Membership is open and free to any member of any APANA region. Further information on APANA and its regions, click here. Existing members should contact the MC for enquiries.
